You've booked a cruise, congratulations! Now that you have your ship and itinerary secured, it's time to create your action plan of all the things to do before you sail. While your travel agent may be able to handle the bulk, you'll still want to be prepared for what is to come to ensure all is seamless and stress-free.

  1. Review your booking confirmation - once your cruise has been booked, you will receive a confirmation email. It is vital that you open this right away to verify the accuracy of all information. Mistakes happen; you're only human. Take a look at:

    • Passenger names - these should be spelled correctly and match the name on their travel identification to prevent boarding delays or denials. If your passport is nearing expiration, renew this sooner than later. Many destinations require the expiry date to extend at least 6 months from your return date.

    • Ship name, sail date, cabin selection, and itinerary - you and/or your agent have likely viewed and compared numerous sail options; double-checking never hurts.

    • All other personal and booking details.

    • Does your booking include flights and hotels? Review these too! If not and you need to fly, ensure you arrive the day before your embarkation to avoid travel delays.

  2. Set payment and price-match reminders - don't pay up front and lose out on potential savings! Cruise prices fluctuate. If the price decreases before your final payment, you may save money by requesting a price adjustment. Budget wisely and know when your final payment date is approaching. Mark these dates in your calendars!

  3. Research travel insurance - compare different plans to suit your needs if you don't already carry insurance. Unforeseen circumstances happen; be protected in the event of emergencies and cancellations.

  4. Download the cruise app - most cruise lines now offer an app to provide information and offer you convenience. Everyone in your cruise party should download this BEFORE you arrive at your cruise port. Wi-fi can be spotty and if you are technology-impatient like I am, you'll thank me.

Play around on the app to know where to find information, such as port and ship itineraries, your cabin number and muster station. The app (for most lines) also allows you to book onboard activities, review and book excursions, and message fellow cruisers. We like to review the main dining room menus ahead of time on the app as well.

One major benefit to downloading the app in advance is the ability to check in early! Mark down your check-in date so you may do so as early as possible. Once you click that check-in button, you can choose an available boarding time. This is also when you'll need to enter your passport and credit card information.

  5. Count down the days until you sail - there isn't much more exciting than the anticipation of boarding that cruise! While you wait, you may also want to coordinate plans with your travel companions, watch YouTube videos about your ship, review the cruise line policies, join the Facebook group for that sailing, and pack smart!
